Turkey has decided to increase tariffs on a series of US imports including passenger cars, alcohol, tobacco, Reuters reported citing the country's Official Gazette.
The decree, signed by President Tayyip Erdogan, raised the tariffs on passenger cars by 120 percent, on alcoholic drinks by 140 percent and on leaf tobacco by 60 percent.
Tariffs were also increased on goods including cosmetics, rice and coal.
It came days after US President Donald Trump said he had authorized higher tariffs on aluminium and steel imports from Turkey as tensions mount between the two countries over several diplomatic issues including Ankara's imprisonment of an American pastor accused of being involved in the failed coup against President Erdogan in 2016.
On Tuesday, President Erdogan said that Turkey would boycott electronic products from the US.
Turkey has been taking necessary measures regarding the economy, amid a slide in the lira currency exacerbated by the dispute with Washington, but it was important to keep a firm political stance, said Erdogan.
