Ji Bingxuan, the special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping, will attend the inauguration of Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on January 1, 2019, announced Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Thursday.
The attendance of Ji, also vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, comes at the invitation of the Brazilian government, Hua added.
Bolsonaro beat left-leaning Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad in the presidential election runoff on October 28.
Bolsonaro, a 63-year-old ex-army captain turned politician, has been a congressman since the early 1990s. He now represents the Social Liberal Party.
