Several big names were missing when Spain announced its star-studded World Cup squad. Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata led the list of Spanish players who missed the bus to Russia after Spain coach Julen Lopetegui announced his 23-man list on Monday. A slew of other formidable players like Morata’s Blues teammates Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Marcos Alonso, Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin, Atletico Madrid forward Vitolo, Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez and the Manchester United duo of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera were the other surprise omissions.
Chelsea’s Ceser Azpilicueta and former Chelsea striker Diego Costa, however, have found favor in the selections and will travel to Russia.

Sergio Ramos will lead the side and is joined by Real Madrid teammates Marco Asensio, Dani Carvajal, Nacho and Lucas Vazquez. Lopetegui chose to limit his midfield by choosing players from the three Spanish La Liga giants – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – alongside Manchester City’s David Silva. Manchester United's David De Gea is the first choice under the bar with former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina backing him up.
Barcelona's Andres Iniesta, who is leaving the Camp Nou after 22 years this summer, is also included. Incidentally, it was Iniesta who scored the match-winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final to help Spain win their maiden title.
Spain, seen by many as tournament favorites, open their campaign against rivals Portugal on June 15 before facing Iran five days later. They close Group B against Morocco on June 25.
