51 dead pilot whales have been seen stranded on rocks this Friday at Chatham Island, home to about 600 people in New Zealand. 50 were already dead when the staff of the Department of Conservative (DOC) arrived, the remaining one had to be euthanized because of its poor condition. /VCG Photo

Less than a week ago, 145 pilot whales were found dead on Stewart Island. When the conservation officials arrived, around 75 of the whales had already died. Considering these whales' poor condition, the workers decided to euthanize the others by shooting them. /VCG Photo

Skin and blubber samples have already been taken from these animals to Massey University to learn more about these species, according to DOC. The dead whales were buried by the DOC and the locals. /VCG Photo
