Every superhero doesn’t wear a cape. Some do manage to accomplish herculean feats with an Ice ax, Belay/rappel device, Crampons, and a Rope. Kami Rita Sherpa is one of those rare superheroes, and he has just bettered his own world record scaling the highest peak in the world – Mount Qomolangma – for a mind-blowing 24th time and the second time in a week.
In a telephonic interview to CGTN from Nepal's capital of Kathmandu, Mingma Sherpa, Company Chairman at Seven Summit Treks, informed, “Kami Rita from Thame village of Solukhumbu district has successfully climbed Mt Qomolangma this morning at 6:38 am from the Nepal side. He was part of a 13-member team of Sherpas and 11 climbers from an Indian police team, who made it to the summit this morning.”
Mingma, who was the first-ever climber to successfully scale all the 14 above-8000 meter summits in the world, added, “This has been a historic week for our friend Kami Rita as he has broken his own record for most summits on the highest point of the world once again.”
49-year-old Kami Rita has been regarded as one of the legends of mountaineering and scaled the legendary 8844.43-meter peak on the border between Nepal and China's Tibet on April 15 for the then record of 23rd time. His first successful climb to the top of Mt. Qomolangma, also known as Mount Sagarmatha in Nepal, was way back in 1994.
With his brother Ihakp Rita also summiting Mt Qomolangma 17 times, the duo from the family has increased the talismanic tally to a record 41.
“Once you climb the iconic mountain then you get attracted to it forever. There is always special energy and force on the top of the world that drives you to the summit time and again. Kami Rita has been mesmerized by that for years.” Mingma explained the reason behind his fellow sherpa's multiple endeavors.
The veteran Sherpa added, “But it's not so easy. There are a life and death ratio of 80:20 up there, and you can't be so sure about returning unscathed and alive.”
According to various official documents, 297 climbers have died while attempting to scale the magnificent monolith till date. That makes about 6.5 percent of the more than 4,000 climbers who have reached the summit since the first ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. There has been one fatality this year, as well as an American climber called Chris Daly, fell to his death on April 20 while trekking down from base camp.
Mingma mentioned, “Kami Rita is not going to climb Mt Qomolangma again this year as he will return home soon. We are likely to see him conquering the peak for a record 25th time next year.”
Kami Rita has already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 meters including K2, Cho-Oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna, among others. However, his fairytale climbs of the world's highest peak have already placed him in the highest pantheon of mountaineering superheroes.
