Element TV Company in South Carolina will sack 126 workers due to sudden increase of component prices, foreign media reported Monday.
The TV company said in a letter to state employment officials that most of the workers will leave mostly on Octber 5, and eight employees will be left to watch the Fairfield County plant, hoping that it can reopen in three to six months.
“The layoff and closure is a result of the new tariffs that were recently and unexpectedly imposed on many goods imported from China, including the key television components used in our assembly operations in Winnsboro,” according to the letter.
The US imposed tariffs of 25 percent on Chinese goods in July, and Chinese components for TVs and video equipment are included. The move could potentially lead to more job losses in US manufacturing states.
