In his lifetime, Karl Marx outlined principles for community development. More than a century after his death, China is putting his theories into practice.
Marx pursued a community of freedom in individuals, said Wang Yiwei, a professor at Beijing-based Renmin University of China, noting that China’s idea of the community of shared future focuses on human beings as a whole, rather than individuals.
Wang believes that China’s collectivism builds a mental framework for the idea of the community of shared future for mankind. He said the collectivism from the East and individualism from the West could eventually find a way to cooperate.
The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative is a good practice of creating this shared community.
"The Belt and Road Initiative focuses on not only economic cooperation, but also identity," said Wang, adding that it "seeks the common values among different religions, cultures and civilizations."
"In China we appreciate the differences, but the Western culture tolerate the differences," Wang said, noting that if one cannot exercise tolerance, chaos is bound to happen.
In a diverse world, Wang believes that China's "middle way" is a good model to deal with conflicts.
