The Liberal Democratic Party is preparing to extend Shinzo Abe's tenure as the party leader, which will pave the way for him to become the longest-serving prime minister in post-war Japan. 62-year-old Abe served as prime minister for around a year before resigning in September 2007. He became prime minister again when the LDP returned to power in December 2012, after a three-year period in opposition. Recent questions in parliament about a land deal benefiting a private school with a nationalist agenda and links to Abe's wife have been a reminder that Abe may be vulnerable, although he has denied any wrongdoing. A survey in January showed the approval rating for Abe's cabinet was over 60 percent.
