Chinese investment in Fiji has expanded greatly in recent years, with focus on the island country’s infrastructure construction under the Belt and Road Initiative and the South-South cooperation framework.
China Railway has brought its best engineers and materials to Fiji for construction of projects such as two bridges in Suva, CGTN's Li Jiejun reports.
Chinese companies have been playing a crucial role in infrastructure construction there, building roads, hospitals and power plants across the country.
Residents have benefited from the infrastructure improvements and local employees also get quality training from their work.
China and eight Pacific Island countries agreed to establish a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and common development in 2014 when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Fiji.
According to the agreement, China would provide the countries with one billion US dollars in concessional loans and a further one billion in commercial loans for infrastructure projects, said Zhang Ping, Chinese ambassador to Fiji.
China has also pledged to provide 2,000 university scholarships and 5,000 training opportunities for Pacific Islanders over the next five years, he said.
