The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday confirmed that it had successfully test-fired another medium-range ballistic missile.

DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un supervised Sunday's launch of the ground-to-ground medium-to-long range strategic ballistic missile "Pukguksong-2", reported the Korean Central News Agency.

Kim approved the deployment of the missile for action, the report said.

Earlier on Sunday, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that Pyongyang fired the ballistic missile from the vicinity of Pukchang in South Pyongan Province, a week after test-firing another new intermediate-range ballistic missile, called the "Hwasong-12".

Sunday’s launch marked Pyongyang's eighth missile test this year and its second missile launch since South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office on May 10.

This was also the second time in a week that the DPRK test-fired a missile.

The "Pukguksong-2" medium range ballistic missile is capable of striking targets about 500 kilometers away. South Korean officials said the latest missile flew about 560 kilometers towards the Sea of Japan.
