Cyclone Mora struck Bangladesh and Myanmar from Monday to Tuesday, with at least five people killed and several coastal cities suffering severe damage.

The storm made landfall on the coast between the Bangladeshi regions of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong at around 6:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Winds of up to 135 kilometers per hour were recorded when the cyclone landed, said the BMD. According to BBC citing local officials, at least five people have been killed, with most deaths caused by collapsing trees in Cox's Bazar and Rangamati.

The BMD has warned that low-lying areas of several coastal districts including Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali and Laxmipur, Feni, as well as their offshore islands are likely to be inundated by tides as a result of the storm.

Bangladesh has evacuated about one million people from its coastline, with Mora poised to cross the country's southern coast.

The country's Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said earlier that some 50,000 volunteers are getting ready for emergency duties, with the support of all other government agencies.

BMD officials said Mora is already weakening, and is gradually reducing to a depression as it moves further north.

The storm has also affected Myanmar, which shares a northwestern border with Bangladesh. Rakhine State was one of the most severely affected areas.

Local rescue workers said Mora had brought severe damage to districts and towns including Sittwe, Maungdaw, Minbya, Myebon and Kyaukpye, with trees uprooted, tiles lifted and electrical wires damaged.
