China has announced a new online platform for providing information on stolen or lost cultural relics. The launch ceremony took place Thursday in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
The bilingual website in Chinese and English was released jointly by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Ministry of Public Security. The aim is to help China reclaim lost or stolen relics both in and outside of the country. The public is encouraged to provide clues in helping find the relics.
LIU YUZHU, DIRECTOR STATE ADMINISTRATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE "The platform is a way to strengthen social supervision. Our work will be more efficient as we make the public informed. And we need more scientific methods to safeguard cultural relics."
Liu Yuzhu says over 22-hundred entries from 19 province-level administrative regions nationwide are in the database. Each entry includes pictures and basic information, such as the historical background, original location and the time it was lost. The next step to get the public involved will be the release of smartphone apps.
