January 27th is the United Nations' International Holocaust Memorial Day. To mark this occasion, an exhibition titled "Jews in Shanghai-- Last Hope and Ultimate Help" has OPENED in Turin, Italy. It features pictures, documents and items recording Jewish refugees' livelihoods in Shanghai.

The rare pictures on display illustrate part of the history during the 1930s to 1940s when thousands of Jewish people fled Nazi-occupied Europe to Shanghai. It's estimated that the Chinese city once played host to a bustling community of over 20,000 Jews.

While a Jewish community has existed in Shanghai since the late 19th century, the first large wave of immigrants came in the 1920s and 30s. When the Second World War broke out in 1939, more European Jews had taken refuge in Shanghai than in any other city in the world. Open to public from January 24th to February 10th, the exhibition is jointly hosted by the Confucius Institute of Turin University, Center for Jewish Studies Shanghai and Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum.
