British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will eradicate avoidable plastic waste by 2042. This is part of her 25-year national environmental protection strategy.
May said on Twitter that the government will use its foreign aid funds to reduce global plastic pollution. She also is calling for fees on single-use plastic items, and urges supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles. By unveiling a new environmental agenda, May is keen to put divisions over Brexit, scandals and an ill-judged election behind her, and try to broaden the appeal of her Conservative Party. However, her moves were still criticised by some lawmakers for not going far enough.
