The Geological Society of America has announced the discovery of an eighth continent called Zealandia. The new continent covers an area of 4.9 million square kilometers including New Zealand and New Caledonia. Ninety-four percent of Zealandia is submerged under the South Pacific ocean. If the discovery is confirmed by the scientific community, the name "Zealandia" may be seen on world maps and even school books in the near future.
