2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics: Torch relay rings in New Year in South Korea
[]
We head to Asia now, and every year on December 31st in Daegu, South Korea the new year is marked with a ringing of the city's Grand Bell at midnight. But with the country hosting this year's Winter Olympics, the ceremony held added importance, as it was done in conjunction with the Pyeongchang Winter Games torch relay.
Sunday's final torchbearer passed the Olympic flame to Daegu mayor Kwon Young-jin, who then officially kicked off South Korea's Olympic year. The torch will reach its final destination on February 9th, when it will light the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The Olympic torch relay began its South Korean leg on November 1st and is travelling along a route measuring exactly 2,018 kilometres through nine provinces and eight major cities. At least 75-hundred torchbearers will help to transport the Olympic flame across the country.
