South Korea fired warning shots after an "unidentified object" from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) flew across the border on Tuesday afternoon, South Korea's military confirmed.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the object was detected flying across the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the Chorwon area in South Korea's eastern province of Ganwon at around 4 p.m. local time.

Along with the warning shots, South Korea's military issued a warning broadcast, Yonhap reported.

The type of object has so far not been identified and South Korea has beefed up its air defense posture.
