Buddhists and tourists released more than 300 fish into the sea off the coast of Hainan Province in southern China on Wednesday, to celebrate the Buddha's birthday. /VCG Photo

This was an occasion for followers of Mahayana Buddhism to practice benevolence, a core practice of the religion. /VCG Photo

It also follows the Buddhist principle of cherishing life and protecting the environment. However, releasing non-native fish into the sea could have the opposite effect, by potentially disrupting the local marine ecosystem. /VCG Photo
