Heavy snow and wind are battering northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region amid the strongest cold wave sweeping the region so far this winter.
In the capital, Urumqi, more than 25,000 workers were deployed to clear snow from the roads, while the policemen also stepped in to ensure smooth traffic. The airport was also closed from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, according to the airport authorities.
Some areas of northern Xinjiang are expected to see extreme low temperatures of minus 34 degrees Celsius, according to the local meteorological department. Meanwhile, gales are sweeping southern Xinjiang. The strong gales forced four passenger trains to suspend operation.
