Opportunities are opening up for many ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. The government is working to provide support to minority groups that are looking to excel in the police force, by offering Chinese language classes and special mentorship programs. 

Abdul Faisal is the first non-ethnic Chinese police inspector since Hong Kong's handover 20 years ago. He was born and brought up in Hong Kong by parents of mixed Pakistani and Chinese heritage. Faisal said he faced discrimination and bullying in his childhood mainly because of his ethnicity. 

Regarding the discrimination toward minority groups in Hong Kong, Yuen Long Police Division has developed Project Himalaya, a program that aims to empower minority groups in the police force by teaching them to master the Chinese language. More than 200 members are a part of the program that was introduced in 2013,  CGTN’s Silkina Ahluwalia reported. 

Faisal now devotes his time to inspire other young people. His story is giving hope to the ethnic-minority communities in Hong Kong that are dreaming big and are on their way to fulfilling those dreams.
