The first bridge for both highways and railways designed and built by Chinese architects will undergo major repairs over the next 27 months to help improve its structural integrity and safety.
The bridge over the Yangtze River, the longest in the country, is located in Nanjing in east China’s Jiangsu Province, and will be closed down next Friday for the upcoming repairs.
It is estimated that the repairs would cost 1.09 billion yuan (around 161 million US dollars).
Built in 1968, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge has double layers. The upper one is used as an expressway, while the lower is a railway. Since 2002, the country has had more than 10 small-scale repairs on the bridge. This time, the bridge will undergo a complete overhaul.
