President Xi sends condolences to Sri Lankan counterpart over deadly floods

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday extended his condolences to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, after more than one hundred people in the country were killed in flash floods.

President Xi expressed his profound condolences to the victims and extended his sincere sympathies to their families.

Xi said China and Sri Lanka are good friends and neighbors, noting that the Chinese people feel the same sorrow with Sri Lankans at this hard time.

Xi also said the Chinese government is willing to support Sri Lanka's government in the rescue operation and would like to offer assistance.

Floods and landslides in Sri Lanka's southern and western regions have killed at least 146 people and damaged more than 1,700 houses.

President Xi also expressed belief that Sri Lanka's government and its people will definitely survive the disaster and rebuild their homes.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also sent condolences to his Sri Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe on the same day.

Unusually heavy rain on Friday triggered a string of mudslides and caused rivers to burst their banks, displacing over 400,000 people, according to the country's Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
