While China is well-known for its love and appreciation of the giant pandas that are endemic to the country’s forests, an altogether cuddlier ursine companion from overseas is trying to muscle in on the nation’s affections.
In 2003, China's national broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) began airing The New Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh, an animation series produced by Walt Disney Television.
This made the so-called “Best bear in all the world” the first foreign cartoon character to become a household name in China, particularly among children.
Disney clearly sees China as an important market.
On March 30, the Winnie the Pooh "Winnie the Pooh: Be My Friend” exhibition opened in Hong Kong.
The presentation is to last three weeks, and will be the largest of its kind in Hong Kong, featuring 92 exquisite artifacts from the Walt Disney Archives.
