The Battle of Stalingrad began in the summer of 1942. It lasted for more than 200 days until February of 1943. It was the longest stand-off during the Second World War. It was marked by savage close quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians in air raids. Nearly 2-million people, military and civilians included, were said to have perished.
