Cairo has responded to Sudan's accusations that Egypt is stealing water from the Nile. Yasser Hakim has more on the tensions between the two African neighbors and long-time friends.
The Egyptian foreign Minister denied the Sudan accusations. He added that before, Sudan didn't have the facilities to store all it's water share and some of it would flow to Egypt against Egypt's will. The overflow endangered Egypt's High Dam especially during high flood season when the Dam reservoir was already full. With the Sudan approval Egypt had to let the water flow into the Mediterranean Sea or into the Toushka reservoir .
MOHAMED SHAZLY FORMER EGYPTIAN AMBASSADOR TO SUDAN "The complaint of sudan is of the access of the waters and floods of the Nile rather than the lack of water resources. And now to claim that Egypt has taken Sudan share in the Nile waters does not make sense with the previous declarations of Sudan . You cannot take the right of Sudan in its water because Sudan is in the upper Nile and Egypt is below it. And if this water doesn't pass through it will create havoc and destruction in Sudan. "
Shoukry expressed his surprise as to why his counterpart brought up this issue now. And some experts believe its not about the Sudan's Nile waters
MOHAMED SHAZLY FORMER EGYPTIAN AMBASSADOR TO SUDAN "I think that Sudan is facing internal problems and external problems with the international community and has been subjected to sanctions and they are trying to deflect their problems to external sources by creating a crisis with Egypt"
Accusations by the Sudanese foreign minister are the latest in a fractured relationship between the two neighbours. They are engulfed in a border dispute as well. And Sudan President Omar AL Bashir has not visited Egypt yet although being invited two months ago.
YASSER HAKIM CAIRO, EGYPT Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam is another issue of conflict. Egypt has complained that Sudan has not taken a firm stance against the Dam's construction. Cairo fears the Dam would reduce Egypt and Sudan's water share. Yasser Hakim CGTN Cairo.
