New Year's Resolutions: How to help the earth and animals in 2018
[]
Many of us wrap up the holiday season with New Year's resolutions. But how do we keep those resolutions past the first few weeks of January? Well, given our world's changing environment, and the daily needs of our four-legged friends, two possible resolutions could be the type for all seasons. CGTN's Mark Fontes reports.
Mall markets are great places for small business vendors, and vendors can be sources of inspiration.
"Being able to help people find new experiences."
Case in point - Cultural Keys' Treasure Trove Market at Beijing's Yoolee Plaza. On hand were dozens of small businesses with ideas for how to start 2018 off right, and make it your best year yet. You can eat healthier, with foods like organic pasta. You could take better care of your skin with soaps made from more natural products and oils. Or you could make a resolution to help the environment.
JOE HARVEY THE BULK HOUSE "People should still be recycling, but it's kind of not the best answer right now."
Or not the only answer, as Beijing's zero-waste gurus at The Bulk House will tell you.
JOE HARVEY THE BULK HOUSE "Refuse, reduce, re-use, repair, recycle and then rot. We have this small range of zero-waste products, so that people who want to start reducing their trash can do it more conveniently. We've got these stainless steel straws, plastic straws are a huge problem, they get used for five or ten minutes, then they're thrown away. Another thing is these, three piece set of organic cotton bags. Do a full shopload of fruits and vegetables for a whole week. You can actually make your own dish detergent, hand wash, and whatever, and you can fill up in here."
Harvey also says online tutorials can show you how to make cleaners that work on glass, countertops and elsewhere, meaning you won't have to waste money on multiple products. And by avoiding toxic products and cutting back on waste, the animal kingdom will thank you.
"Of course the goal is to get them adopted."
Lisa Perry is with The Little Adoption Shop and says she hopes volunteering to help stray dogs will be a popular new year's resolution.
LISA PERRY VOLUNTEER, THE LITTLE ADOPTION SHOP "We take the dogs into the shelter, and we keep them fed, actually on a pretty good quality dog food. We try to give them good conditions, none of the conditions are too overcrowded."
Little Adoption Shop works with cats too, and sells a slew of mementos for all animal lovers to buy. Perry says donations are welcome too.
LISA PERRY VOLUNTEER, THE LITTLE ADOPTION SHOP "To spay and neuter, to keep the numbers down and off the streets, as well as to support us."
And of course supporting any of Beijing's small businesses is a great way to help the local economy, and a resolution that experts say they'd be proud of.
A.J. DONNELLY CULTURAL KEYS "The purpose of the market is basically to help small businesses reach a wider audience. Anything that helps bridge that gap between western culture and Chinese culture is where we've been involved."
Happy 2018. Mark Fontes, CGTN, Beijing.
