China Economic Status: Foreign Ministry: 'Non-market Economy Status' concept not in WTO rules
[]
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has responded to the US denial of China's market economy status, saying the concept of non-market economy countries does not exist in WTO rules. It's called on all WTO members to abandon the "surrogate country" approach in trade with China.
GENG SHUANG SPOKESPERSON, CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "We have clarified our position over this issue many times. In fact, there is no definite stipulation for non-market economy status under the framework of the WTO. The so-called "non-market economy status" was used in domestic law by certain countries during the Cold War period. Today, only a few economies of the 164 WTO members still practice this. According to Article 15 of the Protocol on China's accession to the WTO, the Surrogate Country approach used by other WTO members for anti-dumping investigations against China must be abandoned. It has nothing to do with China's market economy status. We urge all WTO members to follow WTO rules and fulfill their obligations under Article 15."
