In South Africa, all 9-hundred and 55 miners at the Sibanye Stillwater-owned Beatrix gold mine in the Free State, have been rescued. CGTN's Angelo Coppola has this update.
The miners were trapped underground for 30 hours, from the end of their night shift on Thursday morning following a huge thunderstorm which took out the electrical power to the mine. Eskom confirms that its powerlines into the area collapsed during the storm.
With no electricity, the massive cage at number three shaft, used to move miners between the surface and the working levels, wasn't working. According to Beatrix management, the problem was a software glitch between the winder control systems and the generators. This was resolved at 4 o'clock this morning when power was restored and the miners were safely brought to the surface.
Mine unions were quick to criticize the mine for its lack of contingency planning during the unfolding drama but were relieved that everyone had been brought to the surface safely. Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane is due at the mine in the next couple of hours to get a briefing on the incident from mine management and his investigative team. For now, the mine remains closed. Angelo Coppola, CGTN Beatrix Mine, Free State, South Africa.
