[]
We start in Taiwan where at least seven people have been killed and more than 200 injured after a magnitude-6.5 earthquake hit Hualien County, the largest county in Taiwan in terms of size. According to the local disaster relief administration, over 200 people have been rescued, but there are still dozens missing, with most of them trapped in the Yun Men Tsui Ti building. As of 10'o clock GMT, the rescue operation in the building was temporarily suspended due to the severety of the situation. Six tourists from the mainland have been sent to the hospital in Hualien and one of them is in critical condition. Four buildings have either tilted or collapsed, and many roads are damaged. Over 35-thousand households have been hit by water supply interruptions, and more than 200 households have no power. Around 400 soldiers and 3 transport planes are now involved in rescue work. Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expressed deep condolences to all the victims. He said that people from the mainland were deeply concerned about the earthquake and could feel what their Taiwan compatriots felt. He said the mainland is willing to send rescue teams to help, and he hopes local people can overcome the difficulties and rebuild their homes as soon as possible.
