Maldives is a popular destination for the Chinese, and thousands were expected to visit the tropical islands for the Chinese New Year holiday. The ministry is encouraging those who were planning to visit to suspend their trips, and to wait until the situation stabilizes.

China hopes the relevant sides can resolve the issue through negotiation, restore order as soon as possible, and maintain social stability in the country. We believe the Maldivian government and its people have the ability to cope with the current situation. We also urge them to take concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of Chinese facilities and people in the country."
