Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is one of the most popular periods for Chinese tourism. About 66 million domestic travelers hit the road during the first two days of the holiday, and this year more tourists found new destinations, in countries partnering with China as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Data from travel agency Ctrip says that during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday this year, 48 percent of tourists booked trips lasting from four to six days long, while 18 percent took trips of over a week. Travel expenses during long weekends are not as expensive as those during the longer national holidays.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of tourists who are visiting Belt and Road countries. The number of tourists going to the Czech Republic during the long weekend jumped 700 percent, while Ukraine saw a 200 percent increase in Chinese tourists, CGTN’s Chen Tong reports.

The China National Tourism Administration predicts that China will send 150 million tourists to Belt and Road countries between 2016 and 2020, who are expected to spend 200 billion US dollars during their trips.
