Yu Zhengsheng, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), has delivered a report on the work of the top political advisory body, as the fifth session of the 12th National Committee of the CPPCC opened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Yu noted that the advisory body's political consultations were made more fruitful over the last year, particularly in alleviating poverty.
“We continued to devote our main efforts to making proposals and suggestions for the implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). Focusing on the major tasks we face in finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, we carried out 92 research and consultation activities, concerning the most pressing and difficult issues,” said Yu.
Yu described how efforts were particularly focused on eliminating poverty in rural areas.
“We encouraged and supported National Committee members as they assisted counties and families struggling with poverty through pairing programs, and participated in the ‘ten thousand businesses helping ten thousand villages’ initiative,” the chairman added.
“We provided financial aid to students in need, and promoted the use of a combination of poverty alleviation efforts, such as developing local industries, creating employment opportunities, improving medical services, and granting subsidies for the conservation of ecosystems, in order to form a synergy to combat poverty,” said Yu.
