Chinese mainland authorities reiterated on Thursday that any attempt by Taiwan to use force to resist reunification is doomed to fail and will get the island nowhere.‍

The Democratic Progressive Party administration should abandon its "Taiwan independence" stance and antagonistic mentality, An Fengshan, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office said during a press conference.

"Only by recognizing the common political foundation of the 1992 Consensus can the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations be maintained,“ An said.

An made the remarks when asked to comment on an ongoing military drill in Taiwan, which has simulated a mainland attack.

Major changes have affected cross-Strait relations in the past year, resulting in increased tension between the two sides, loss of past achievements in peaceful development and damage to the interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, noted An, blaming Taiwan authorities for refusing to uphold the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle.

Despite the complicated and currently unfavorable situation across the Strait, Beijing still believes that relations should return to the right path of peaceful development.
