Ecuador has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The country is also seeking what it calls a dignified and just solution to his situation with Britain.
Ecuador's foreign minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa made the announcement on Thursday in the nation's capital Quito. Assange is famous for facilitating the publication of classified military and diplomatic documents on the US war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's considered one of the largest information leaks in American history.
Assange has been living in Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over rape allegations. Swedish prosecutors dropped their probe on the accusations in May last year, and British police then said they would arrest Assange for breaching bail conditions if he leaves the embassy.
