Russian police have detained the opposition activist Alexei Navalny at an unauthorized protest in Moscow.

Six of his allies were detained in a raid on Navalny's headquarters after his supporters started a day of nationwide protests. They're calling for a boycott of the presidential election in March, saying it has been rigged. Navalny has been barred from running because of a conviction for corruption. Opinion polls give incumbent president Vladimir Putin an overwhelming lead.
