US President Donald Trump has met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.

At a joint press conference, Trump criticized Iran for its "aggression" and said Tehran should be "grateful to the United States" for negotiating a "fantastic" deal with the previous US administration.

Trump's visit to Jerusalem is part his first trip abroad since taking office. On Monday, he met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Netanyahu, and on Tuesday, the US president is scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as part of Washington's efforts to push for peace between Israel and Palestine.

In Saudi Arabia, the first leg of his trip, Trump accused Iran of fuelling "the fires of sectarian conflict and terror" while calling for its international isolation.

Iran's re-elected President Hassan Rouhani said his country is ready for interaction with its neighbors to restore peace in the Middle East. The Iranian president was speaking at a press conference in Tehran, responding to criticism from Trump.

Rouhani said last week's elections in Iran showed the country was ready for more moderate policies and democracy and interaction with the world, noting that this would lead to much-needed economic progress.
