Video footage showing a babysitter "vigorously" rocking a baby, in Xingtai City of north China's Hebei Province, has gone viral, raising questions and condemnation of the "right way" to get a baby to sleep. The video has now been watched over 30,000 times, with more than 24,000 people commenting on it.
The baby was later taken to hospital by the parents. Doctors said the way the babysitter was "rocking" the baby may have caused a brain hemorrhage.
Medical personnel said the babysitter's actions could have led to shaken baby syndrome, which triggers severe brain damage, including subdural hematoma, retinal bleeding, and brain swelling. In a majority of cases there is no visible sign of external injury.
Shaken baby syndrome occurs when someone violently shakes an infant out of frustration or anger, often because a child won't stop crying. Although shaking does eventually make the baby stop crying, the violent movement causes bruising, swelling, and bleeding.
