The Syrian government will abide by the safe zones deal concluded by Russia, Iran and Turkey, warning however that any breach by the rebels will be met with retaliation, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said Monday at a news conference.
Moallem also stressed there will be no international forces under UN supervision as part of the safe zones deal in Syria, according to AP.
What is the "safe zones" deal?
The safe zones deal was agreed at a new round of peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana last Thursday, despite the opposition of rebel groups. Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed on creating four safe zones in Syria, with the "safe zones" plan going into effect on Saturday.
The four safe zones cover all of Idlib Province, as well as parts of Aleppo, Latakia and Homs. Under the terms of the deal, all use of weapons will be banned in those areas while humanitarian aid will be allowed to be brought in.
