Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he's pleased that Papua New Guinea authorities have relocated the last asylum seekers on Manus Island. The men had refused for three weeks to leave. Police and immigration officials removed nearly 400 men from the male-only camp over two days.
They're now in residences in the nearby town of Lorengau. Refugee advocates say officials used force and destroyed the men's belongings to make them leave Manus. Asylum seekers still fear for their safety in Lorengau because of threats from local residents.
Australia pays its nearest neighbor Papua New Guinea and the tiny Pacific nation of Nauru to hold thousands of asylum seekers who have attempted to reach Australian shores by boat since mid-2013. They come from Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
