Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has wrapped up his first official visit to Russia. Rouhani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow. They discussed energy, economic and military cooperation as well as the situation in Syria.
More than a dozen inter-government memorandums were signed, including ones on easing visa restrictions as well as oil & gas and nuclear energy cooperation.
In a joint statement, the two leaders said efforts by Iran and Russia, together with Turkey, contributed to establishing a ceasefire and further de-escalation in Syria.
Earlier, Iran said Russia could use its military bases 'on case by case basis' for its air campaign against radical militants in Syria. Yet, Rouhani indicated Russia-Iran military cooperation is neutral.
Iran's increasing influence in the region, as well as Moscow's supplies of anti-missile weapons to Tehran, has raised security concerns among its neighbors and revived anxiety over the possibility of Iran boosting its nuclear capabilities. Rouhani's two-day visit to Russia was closely monitored by international observers for signs of further rapprochement between the two countries.
