Six inmates were confirmed dead on Friday at the Puraquequara Prison on the outskirts of Manaus in northern Brazil, Brazilian authorities confirmed.
Local police did not provide any details about the cause of the deaths but said “there was no riot or rebellion” in the prison.
The six inmates were detained in separate cells except two of them who shared the same cell, AFP reported citing a local official.
An investigation was underway and police were questioning other detainees in the cells where the inmates were found dead.
Conflicts among inmates have sometimes occurred in prisons in the country’s northern border areas as some of the prisons are under de facto control of drug gangs. Earlier this year, a 17-hour-long brutal riot took place at a prison in Manaus, killing at least 60 people inside.
