Poland Holocaust Bill: Polish PM Morawiecki says Poland will never limit Holocaust debate
[]
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki says Poland would never limit the freedom to debate the Holocaust, and that Warsaw understood Israel's emotions about the issue. The remarks came in the wake of Polish lawmakers' overwhelming approval of draft legislation penalizing suggestions of any complicity by Poland in the Nazi Holocaust on its soil during World War Two. The move has been criticized by Israel and the United States.
MATEUSZ MORAWIECKI POLISH PRIME MINISTER "We will never limit the debate about the Holocaust, we owe it to all who have experienced it."
Poland's foreign ministry said Warsaw hoped relations with the United States would remain unchanged, despite the newly adopted legislation. Meanwhile, a string of Israeli politicians, survivors, and experts on the Nazi Holocaust blasted the approval of the draft without any amendment. They say the bill constitutes "a denial of Poland's part in the Holocaust". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Poland had agreed to talks over a proposed law to criminalize blaming the country for Holocaust crimes.
