In the Maldives, ex-president Mohamed Nasheed has called on India to send an envoy backed by its military to free Supreme Court judges and detainees held by the government.
President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency on Monday, after refusing to comply with a court order to release political dissidents. Heavily armed troops stormed the Supreme Court and arrested two of its justices. Police have not yet given details of the operation or pressed any charges. The president also arrested his half-brother and former leader of the archipelago, Abdul Gayoom.
