Nanluoguxiang really is one of the must-see sights of Beijing.
With the sustainable growth of China’s economy, and the further implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, China’s tourism industry has seen unprecedented growth in recent years. In the eyes of many overseas travelers, China is a popular destination for its unique long history, culture, architecture and local traditions.
China is currently the third most visited country in the world. According to statistics, there were 98.8 million people who traveled to China in 2015 for tourism, business or work, a number that is expected to increase in the future. According to the WTO, in 2020, China will become the largest country in terms of both inbound and outbound tourism.
Among all the cities in China, Beijing is the number one destination, and not just because it is the capital. The most popular attractions include the Great Wall, the Palace Museum (also known as the Forbidden City), the Temple of Heaven and the famous ancient network of lanes unique to Beijing, called hutongs. Nanluoguxiang is one of the most outstanding examples of traditional hutong lifestyle in the city.
Nanluoguxiang dates all the way back to the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368), and is approximately 800 meters long, acting as an artery near the beating heart of the old city as it connects many other smaller hutongs together.
In recent years, the area’s reputation for traditional Beijing food and Chinese architecture has made it a popular tourist destination, developing into a street full of hip restaurants, bars, cafes and souvenir shops.
CCTVNEWS paid a visit to this hutong to find out what makes it such a popular destination, and to ask international travelers why they decided to pay a visit there. Take a look to find out more about this must-see destination, Nanluoguxiang.
