At least two people were killed and 36 others injured after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday jolted Taikkyi, Myanmar’s Yangon region, a local official confirmed on Tuesday.
The two victims were a 58-year-old military officer and a six-year-old child, according to a Xinhua report.
The quake struck the region at around 8:49 p.m. local time (14:19 GMT) with an epicenter around 35.4 km southwest of Taikkyi.
Tremors were felt in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city and commercial hub, with some citizens reportedly forced to evacuate their homes. Several religious buildings in Taikkyi were damaged after the quake.
A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar in August 2016, leaving at least three people dead and at least 68 pagodas damaged.
