India’s software services industry has become the latest target of the Trump administration’s moves to protect American jobs. The executive order to overhaul the H-1B work-visa program will impact the Indian technology industry which is already reeling from profitability and revenue problems.
Indian techies they feel the worst is yet to come. The new and imminent US visa curbs will affect thousands of Indians who are likely to return to India adding to this existing job crunch.

For millions working in the software industry, the dream to be in America has always been a driving force. And for companies, this has been the best choice to fill the gap, as there is a lack of trained professionals in US. In such a scenario, Trump’s new diktat regarding the visas could prove to be a loss for the country.
“The companies will continue their efforts to hire locally, which makes more sense economically but to the extent that they are unable to find people, either the work will be shifted out of the US or it will not get done which is less beneficial to the US economy,” said R. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Nasscom.

While the industry believes Americans will be at a loss due to Trump’s decision, the Indian government is adopting a confrontational mode. “Many of the countries have given their commitments in the WTO, the US has committed a certain number even in the WTO so we can question them,” said Nirmala Sitharaman, Indian minister of commerce.
Most Indian IT companies get over 60 percent of their revenues from the American market and if President Trump gets his way the impact would be felt back home as well.

the Indian government said it is in talks with the US but at the same time it has hinted at counter measures against the US companies operating out of India. Whether common ground will be arrived at between the two countries is still unknown but one thing is for sure and that is that the techies of India are in trouble.
