The South Korean navy was due to begin joint military exercises with the United States in waters around the Korean Peninsula on Sunday.
The drills, lasting until March 25, come at a time of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following missile and nuclear tests by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
