Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has denied that US President Donald Trump shared highly classified information with him in talks in mid-May, though the diplomat did mention that the issue of global terrorism was discussed.
Lavrov said the "secret" revealed was that terrorists are capable of stuffing all kinds of electronic devices with untraceable explosive materials.
"As far as I can recall...the Trump administration had an official ban on laptops on airlines from seven Middle Eastern countries, and it was connected directly with a terrorist threat. So if you are talking about that, I see no secret here," said the diplomat.
Moscow had earlier rejected as "nonsense" US media reports that classified information about security threats by ISIL was shared by President Trump during his Oval Office meeting with Lavrov and the Russian ambassador to the US.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters on Wednesday he was ready to prove no such thing happened and provide Congress with a transcript of the meeting, and dismissed suggestions anything in that conversation was classified.
However, the Kremlin refrained from commenting on the appointment of former FBI chief Robert Mueller as a special independent counsel to oversee a probe into Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
