South Korea on Thursday completed a deal to provide US Forces Korea (USFK) with land acquired from Lotte Group earlier this year to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system, reported Yonhap News Agency citing the country’s foreign ministry.
The bilateral deal allowed the US military to begin work for the deployment of the THAAD system in the roughly 300,000 square meters of land in the southeastern county of Seongju.
The defense ministry will lead the remaining procedures to deploy the THAAD battery, including an environmental assessment and the construction of facilities inside the base.
Earlier in the day, two residents were injured as local people and peace activists tussled with police officers outside the entrance to the site, as two USFK soldiers drove two payloaders inside.
China firmly opposes South Korea's deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system.
