China believes the Venezuelan people can protect their country's stability and economic development following casualties during nationwide protests in the Latin American country on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a daily press briefing on Friday.
China is aware the Venezuelan government hopes to resume talks with the opposition, Lu added.

"As a friend of Venezuela, China sincerely hopes and believes that the Venezuelan people can properly handle their domestic affairs," Lu said.
A power struggle between the ruling socialist party in Venezuela and the right-wing opposition has created an economic and political crisis, and provoked widespread protests.

According to reports, anti-government protests in Venezuela's capital and 14 other states have left at least two dead, 62 injured and some 300 arrested.
